Issues and Problems

eoul Battleship Park's exhibition is a good topic that evokes the Navy's main duties and patriotism, but it is not geographically accessible to people, and it is difficult to attract tourists continuously. It is also difficult to blend in with nearby trails and sports facilities.

Seoul Battleship Park had to be rebuilt by bypassing the existing trail because it violated the existing trail.

Phasing Strategy

The Master Plan

Located on the first floor, the submarine's right-hand side was cut for easy viewing, and deep-sea images were produced on the wall to create a sense of immersion. On the first and second floors of the information center, exhibitions under the theme of "Seoul Ham Park, three warships, and the Han River" are provided, and the rooftop observatory on the third floor of the information center shows the Han River and the Seoul Box. In the back of the building, an outdoor stage is installed and used for stage events. The interesting thing about the building is that the entire building is designed to float on the water when the flood occurs in preparation for the flooding of the Han River. As a rural person, this advantage came to me interestingly. Even during the 2020 flood, the Seoul warship was floating on its own buoyancy, so there was no problem, and the building was also not flooded because it was completely floating when submerged. In the case of a chamsu-ri box, it was installed more than two meters above the floor, so it was not damaged by flood. It was also impressive that it fell back to its original position even after the water drained.

Lessons Learned

What is the most important take away from this case?

The only content of the exhibition is the introduction of the ship.

Why is this case relevant today and for whom?

The main users are the residents of the area because it has a residential area and is next to the promenade. However, it is difficult to use the exhibition continuously because it does not match the surrounding programs. In the case of tourists, it is difficult to access, so it is introduced to tourist attractions in Seoul, but it seems difficult for tourists to visit.

Which strategy was proved to be successful?

An exhibition hall was built next to the Han River, and in the case of the Seoul Battleship Park, it was completely floating on the water. In addition, I think it is successful that the exhibition hall was able to rise on its own during the flood of han river, so that it was not damaged by flood. In fact, when the Han river flooded in 2020, the Seoul Battleship was already float, so there was no problem, and the exhibition hall was also float and the Chamsu-ri Battleship was placed 2 meters away from the ground from the land, so it was rarely damaged.

In your opinion, what could have improved this project?

There is a park in front of the exhibition hall, and I thought it would serve a special function because the grass was divided into several broken sections, but few events took place in the park, and even the events that took place had nothing to do with the division of the park's lawn. Turning this park space into a more meaningful space will increase the utilization rate of the facility and make it a more meaningful exhibition. Most of the current exhibitions are mainly about explaining the space inside the battleship and simple viewing. However, it could be a more meaningful exhibition if the ship's direct history, mission process, and scientific functional explanations were included. Since the internal exhibition is made of a huge Battleship and the program is just a simple viewing, people who visit once no longer need to visit. I thought there was a need for a way for internal programs to continue to develop or reintroduce tourists to special events.

Any other comments?

Since Korea is currently a truce country, I think even ordinary people need to understand and respect our military, and this project was suitable for this project, but I think the concerns about wasting Seoul's budget have become a reality because of the problems described above.
