Originally, there was no communication between the East and the West because the lower space was used as a residential parking lot. After the Roof square was planned, shops lined up along the overpass used space as an outdoor terrace, and residents of East and West used it as a resting place. In addition, a roof was created in the lower space of the huge scale, and a human scale was formed. Roof is made of various types of space because it is not horizontal but diagonal. On the first floor, you can experience high or low ceilings and you can freely come and go east and west because there is no wall to distinguish space. On the second floor, the horizontal space is used as a space for exercise, and the space made of diagonal lines is used as a space for sitting and resting.

Social Context

It is part of 'the project and operation of the space development project for the lower part of the highway(고가하부공간 활용사업 타당성 조사 및 종합계획)'.It is a follow-up to the Oksu High Street Subspace Plan. The lower space of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's overpass is about 1,554,679m2, which is used as a parking lot, but mostly not used. In Seoul, which lacks available land, it is intended to utilize the lower space of the overpass with low utilization.

Historical Context

The plan for the lower space of the highway is a research topic that started in the late 1990s and has been increasing since the mid-2000s. The highpass roads built during the industrialized era can be used as a space with historical characteristics. In addition, in order to increase the utilization of space throughout Seoul for urban regeneration, it begins to study the utilization and plan of the sub-space of the idle space, the lower space of high-pass.

The Plan

Current Status

In order to preemptively respond to changes in the spatial structure of the future city, they are planning an innovative urban re-creation model

Lessons Learned

What is the most important take away from this case?

Designing idle space as a public space for local residents, which led to local communication.

Why is this case relevant today and for whom?

High-pass roads continue to be built by necessity; local residents may be harmed, despite the infrastructure. The plan to use idle space on the overpass can be an attempt to minimize the damage.

Which strategy was proved to be successful?

In your opinion, what could have improved this project?

Despite the well-planned public space, I went to the survey and checked it out and found that the management was not working properly, with a door broken or a lot of pollen on the deck.I would like to hire local residents who want a job to maintain public space.

Any other comments?

The higpass has been built in our neighborhood, but it is not used even though the lower space is wide and high. It is used as a place to install meaningless sculptures or to wait for delivery workers to smoke. I hope our area will banch this case and make good public facilities in the neighborhood.
